It was with great sadness that I received news of the passing of Dr. David Maehr. His tragic plane crash on June 20th, 2008 occurred within two months of his speaking at the OSU School of Environment and Natural Resources Spring Dinner about his black bear research. While I had never before met with or spoke to Dr. Maehr, I was enamored by his work and articulation during his presentation. As I listened, I was taken by his sharp humor and love for his research and family.

During the dinner’s program, several of the speakers noted a common thread among alumni, students, and the field of natural resources; we are family. As such, Dr. Maehr was a member of our family and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him, worked with him, and especially those closest to him. I offer my deepest condolences to his family and to the profession. Indeed, this is a great and tragic loss.

In the brief time that I spoke with Dr. Maehr, I was captivated by his enthusiasm. It was this passion that inspired many others to follow in his footsteps. His legacy and his work will continue to live on through his students and colleagues. As such, our alumni society is proud to contribute to the Dave Maehr Memorial Fund to continue the advancement of wildlife conservation and management.
