Get Details on Jeni's Sustainability Success, Plus Ice Cream at Breakfast

April 13, 2015

This article written by Kurt Knebusch was originally published on the website of the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Splurge and have ice cream at breakfast. Especially, according to Time magazine, “the best ice cream in America.”

The next Environmental Professionals Network breakfast program at The Ohio State University features Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. The Columbus company, which is expanding nationally, last year earned B Corp certification for its sustainability practices, one of only eight Ohio businesses to hold that distinction.

Christine Deye, Jeni’s director of community and environmental stewardship, will speak on the achievement from 7:15-9:30 a.m. May 12 in Ohio State’s Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center, 2201 Fred Taylor Drive in Columbus. Her talk is called “Splendidly Sustainable: Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams Earns B Corp Status.”

Joseph Fiksel, executive director of the university’s “Sustainable Economy” Discovery Theme, will also be on the program discussing “Toward a Sustainable and Resilient Economy.”

The network is a service of Ohio State’s School of Environment and Natural Resources, in turn part of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.

B Corp certification requires companies to meet certain social, environmental, accountability and transparency standards. It’s similar to Fair Trade certification for coffee and LEED certification for buildings.

B Corp-certified companies, according to the program’s website, use “the power of business to solve social and environmental problems.”

Jeni’s makes such flavors as Brambleberry Crisp, Goat Cheese with Red Cherries, Intelligentsia Black Cat Espresso, and Toasted Brioche with Butter and Raspberry Jam, to name a few. All are made using grass-grazed milk from small family farms in Ohio.

Registration for the event is $10 by cash or check, $15 by credit card, and includes both a warm breakfast and samples of Jeni’s ice cream. Find details and a link to online registration at go.osu.edu/2rb.

Registration is open to both members and nonmembers of the network. The registration deadline is May 8.
