SENR Undergraduates Share Research at Forum

March 3, 2014

On Thursday, February 20, 2014, the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) hosted the 11th Annual CFAES Undergraduate Research Forum in the Agricultural Administration Auditorium on the campus of The Ohio State University. Thirty-one undergraduate student researchers from CFAES and the School of Environment and Natural Resources shared their research in a poster presentation format with faculty, staff, fellow students and invited family members and guests.

Faculty judges lent their expertise and research insight, evaluating and ranking the presentations in each of the five categories and provided invaluable feedback to the researchers. Many of the participating undergraduates will be presenting their research at the upcoming Denman Undergraduate Research Forum to be held Wednesday, March 26, 2014, which brings together hundreds of undergraduate researchers from across the University to present their research.

Four SENR undergraduates participated in this year's CFAES Research Forum, including:

Rachel Hefflinger who presented, "Examining the Short Term Effects of Restoration Plantings on Emerald Ash Borer Infested Plains." Rachel's project advisor is Dr. Kathleen S. Knight, Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology.
Robert Medberry who presented, "The Effect of Acclimation to Hypoxia on Fish Sensitivity to Ammonia Toxicity." Robert's project advisor is Dr. Konrad Dabrowski, School of Environment and Natural Resources.

Mackenzie Miller who presented, "Beginning Life Uncovered: Chemical Dechlorionation of Freshwater Fish Embryos." Mackenzie's project advisor is Dr. Konrad Dabrowski, School of Environment and Natural Resources.
Chloë Welch who presented, "Bioturbation by Invasive Rusty Crayfish (Orconectes Rusticus) Affects Turbidity and Nutrients: Implications for Harmful Algal Blooms." Chloë's project advisor is Dr. Lauren Pintor, School of Environment and Natural Resources.

A refreshment reception was held from 3:30-4:00 pm sponsored by Gamma Sigma Delta followed by an awards presentation.

Prizes were awarded to the top-ranked researchers in each category. Robert Medberry, a senior majoring in Environmental Science with a Water Science specialization was awarded 2nd place in the Environmental and Plant Sciences category for his research poster, "The Effect of Acclimation to Hypoxia on Fish Sensitivity to Ammonia Toxicity." Robert is advised by Dr. Konrad Dabrowski.
