Trees & Sidewalks
Most of this study was done in the City of Cincinnati with
the support of the city’s urban forestry personnel.
Four genera of trees commonly grown in Ohio’s cities
and villages were evaluated for their tendency to disrupt
sidewalks. Differences were quite striking. Soil types also
appear to be a factor in the tendency of sidewalks to fail
with or without trees. Soil types have not previously been
considered when constructing sidewalks.
