Maninder Walia's Doctoral Scholarly Seminar

Dec 9, 2014, 3:30pm - 4:30pm

A Graduate Defense Seminar will be presented by Maninder Walia, PhD Candidate in Soil Science. Her presentation will be Effect of Long Term Integrated Nutrient Management on Rice-Wheat Productivity and Soil Health in North India, at 3:30 p.m. in 123 Williams Hall w/video link to 245 Kottman Hall.

Rice and wheat both are dominant components of the Indian food security system as they are consumed as major staple food. Presently, the rice–wheat cropping system is showing sign of ‘fatigue’ due to continuous cropping of this highly nutrient and water exhaustive cereal–cereal system for the last several decades. Mineral fertilizer application has reached such high levels that many ill side effects are appearing, such as adverse effects on soil properties, over-exploitation of natural resources, ground water pollution, etc. The integrated use of green manure (GM) and organic manure with chemical fertilizer resulted in a build-up of available nutrients in soil much more effectively than that of chemical fertilizer alone. So, the present study will focus on the effect of application of fertilizers alone or in combination with organic manures on rice-wheat productivity and soil health in North India.
