    The 2018 Denman Undergraduate Research Forum, put on by the Undergraduate Research Office and with support from Martha and Richard Denman gives students the opportunity to showcase their research, scholarships, and other creative activities to Ohio State.

    This years' forum will be held on April 3rd, from 8am-5pm at the Ohio Union, Archie Griffin Grand Ballroom.

    Ashlee Balcerzak, an Environmental Science major in the SENR was recognized as a 2018 College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences Outstanding Senior.  The 2018 Outstanding Senior Awards were presented during the CFAES 2018 Outstanding Senior Awards Dinner on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at the OSU Fawcett Event Center.

    Students at The Ohio State University have a unique opportunity to take a two-course sequence that culminates with a real prescribed burn and certification. The courses, offered by CFAES’s School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR), teach about fire ecology, fire’s role in ecosystems, and managing controlled and wild fires. In the end, students prepare for and conduct a prescribed burn.

    Controlled Prairie Burn Featured in The Columbus Dispatch

    A controlled prairie burn at The Wilds is described via photos and a video feature in The Columbus Dispatch on March 16. Rebecca Swab, director of Restoration and Ecology at The Wilds narrates the video and discusses how their management practices go hand-hand with research on native plant and wildlife restoration efforts. The study is part of a research project with School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR) graduate student Rachael Glover to investigate how quickly native grasses regenerate after fire. Rachel is advised by Matt Davies, an assistant professor of in Soil and Plant Community Restoration in the SENR.

    Ohio State will recognize World Water Day 2018 with a Water Awareness event March 22 from 12 noon to 3 pm in the Ohio Union Great Hall Meeting Room #2. World Water Day, on March 22 every year, focuses attention on the importance of water. An initiative of the United Nations, the theme for World Water Day 2018 is ‘Nature for Water’ – exploring nature-based solutions to the water challenges we face in the 21st century.  Stop by to learn about important Ohio State water improvement research and what our students are doing to provide safe, convenient water supplies in Tanzania and other places in need.

    Revised Phosphorus Index Can Help Curb Agricultural Runoff

    Ohio farmers will soon have access to a newly revised tool that can quickly and easily tell them their risk of agricultural phosphorus runoff that could potentially move into Ohio waterways such as Lake Erie.  All with the help of an online program.  The revised Ohio Phosphorus Risk Index is a program developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resource Conservation Service to help farmers assess their risk of phosphorus moving off farm fields. It will soon allow farmers to input their farm-specific data to generate their risk of phosphorus in agricultural runoff. The revised index is the result of the multiyear On-Field Ohio project led by Elizabeth (Libby) Dayton, a researcher in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University.
