Facilities Operations and Development recently partnered with five Ohio State students on their 15-week EEDS (Environment, Economics, Development and Sustainability) Capstone project. The Ohio State University is the lead research partner for the Smart Columbus program, but it’s not just faculty leading the way. Students are also working to make Columbus a smarter city. Students from the School of Environment and Natural Resources showed off their senior projects at the Environmental Professionals Network breakfast on Tuesday and the Smart Columbus program was the focus of nine of the projects.

Congratulations to Lauren Pintor, assistant professor of aquatic ecology in the School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR), who was awarded the Rodney F. Plimpton Outstanding Teacher Award. The Rodney F. Plimpton Teaching Award recognizes excellence in teaching, both in and out of the formal classroom in the College of Food, Agriculture, and Environmental Sciences.

A new magazine article in MIT’s Undark, “Learning to Love the Great Black Swamp”, written by Sharon Levy, features restoration of portions of the Great Black Swamp in NW Ohio and highlights Professor Emeritus William (Bill) Mitsch’s idea, as well as other scientists, and officials thoughts on how to address algae in Lake Erie’s western basin in light of the transformation from wetlands to agricultural fields. Bill will soon be starting his 6th academic year in September 2017 as Eminent Scholar, Spoule Endowed Chair, and Director, Everglades, Wetland Research Park in Naples FL. He and his wife Ruthmarie reside in Upper Arlington in the summers.

Nearly 1,000 students at The Ohio State University have prepared scientific posters about Earth’s biggest challenges for the university’s 2017 Environmental Science Student Symposium. Among those students, about 400 will present their work in person at the event, which is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Archie M. Griffin Grand Ballroom in Ohio State’s Ohio Union, 1739 N. High St., in Columbus. Admission is free and open to the public. This is the fifth year that Ohio State students enrolled in ENR 2100, an introductory environmental science course offered by the School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR), will present posters on their final projects. The symposium program is available online at go.osu.edu/2017ESSS. SENR is part of the university’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.

Columbus’s technology-intense Smart Columbus project, which last year beat out ideas from 77 other cities to win the U.S. Department of Transportation’s $40 million Smart City Challenge, is the focus of an April 18 event at The Ohio State University. Aparna Dial, who’s a staff member with the project and the deputy director of Columbus’s Department of Public Service, will present “Columbus: One Smart and Sustainable City — Using Innovative Technology to Improve People’s Access to Opportunity” as part of the Environmental Professional Network’s (EPN) public Breakfast Club series.

Rattan Lal, director of the Carbon Management and Sequestration Center at The Ohio State University, was honored with the Elsevier Atlas award March 31, for his journal article “Food Security in a Changing Climate," published in the “Ecohydrology & Hydrobiology" journal in April 2013.
