    Kristi Lekies, assistant professor and state Extension specialist in the School of Environment and Natural Resources has been elected to serve on the council for the Rural Sociological Society (RSS). The RSS is a professional social science association that promotes the generation, application, and dissemination of sociological knowledge. Established in 1937, the RSS seeks to enhance the quality of rural life, communities, and the environment.

    Rattan Lal, a soil scientist and director of Ohio State University's Carbon Management and Sequestration Center is quoted in a recent Ideas article written by Rebecca Tuhus-Dubrow for The Boston Globe.  The article, "How to solve climate change with cows (maybe)" (5/4) asks "Could better grazing patterns be the answer?" 

  4. SENR Faculty Member Elected to Leadership Position with Ohio Society of American Foresters

    Eric McConnell, assistant professor in the School of Environment and Natural Resources and Ohio State University Extension forest products specialist was recently voted chair-elect of the Ohio Society of American Foresters. The Ohio Society of American Foresters (OSAF) is the state chapter of the Society of American Foresters and represents nearly 250 professional foresters, forest technicians, and student members.

  6. Students Offer Sustainability Solutions to Mayor Coleman’s Green Team

    Students in “Assessing Sustainability: Project Experience” (ENR 4567) received hands-on training this semester on preparing and presenting research to policymakers. The class, which is co-taught by Elena Irwin and Gregory Hitzhusen, recently presented research findings to the City of Columbus’ Mayor’s Green Team. The work conducted by the students will contribute to the development of the Green Team’s “Green Memo III” which is the city’s next five-year plan for sustainability that the Mayor will unveil in 2015.

    In Autumn 2014, a new Ohio State learning community, Students Understanding Sustainability and Taking Action to Improve Nature and Society (SUSTAINS), will launch on the Ohio State campus.  Students interested in becoming a member of the SUSTAINS Learning Community must complete a Learning Community Application by May 2, 2014.

  10. New OSU Extension Expert Working with Growers to Reduce Nutrient Loads

    A new soil fertility specialist with Ohio State University’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences is looking for a few good growers to help update fertility recommendations for Ohio soybeans. Steve Culman, a newly hired Ohio State University Extension specialist in soil fertility, is part of a team of college experts seeking soybean growers to participate in a project to look at phosphorus and potassium in soybeans as part of an overall effort to update the Tri-State Fertility Recommendations (Ohio, Michigan and Indiana) for soybeans.
