A new exhibition Farewell Transmission: Community Resilience amid the End of Coal in Ohio debuts this week on campus. SENR welcomes Dr. Marijke Hecht, who joins us as an assistant professor of environmental education! 

Dr. Hecht conducts research on how experiences across home, school, and informal spaces, such as parks and museums, support environmental interest and identity development and works collaboratively with educators, learners, and community members to explore urban greenspaces as valuable sites for learning, advocacy, and stewardship and to foster relationships between human and more-than-human beings in support of multispecies justice.

Dr. Hecht will teach ENR 3611 – Introduction to Environmental Education, a foundational course that prepares students for understanding the theoretical bases and best practices for effective environmental education and communications.

Dr. Rattan Lal, a distinguished university professor of soil science and director of the CFAES Rattan Lal Center for Carbon Management and Sequestration, is the principal investigator of the new project titled, “Enhanced Soil Carbon Farming as a Climate Solution." 

Kimberly Ordonez and Harrison Fried, doctoral students in SENR will present data-driven tools for participants that bridge environmental concerns between organizations to improve the efficiency and longevity of program outcomes designed to address climate change adaption in central Ohio at the September 13 Environmental Professionals Network breakfast, "Advancing environmental justice in extreme heat and adapting through collaborative networks." The exhibition, Farewell Transmission: Community Resilience amid the End of Coal in Ohio kicks off this week on campus! Make your plans to visit the exhibition at Hopkins Hall Gallery here and the companion exhibit at Thompson Library. 

Farewell Transmission is a collaboration between the School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR), the Department of Geography, the Department of Theatre, Film, and Media Arts, the Glenn College of Public Affairs, Ohio State University Extension, and the Ohio State University Libraries. 

You can learn a bit more about the impetus behind the exhibition on our website from faculty member Jeffrey Jacquet, but also check out how this collaboration is inspiring additional artistic expressions in the August 12 Coshocton Tribune.

Faculty member Roger Williams will discuss, "Effects of Wildfire and the Presence of the Invasive Paulownia tomentosa on the Regeneration of Native Tree Species in North-Central Appalachia" on the webinar, "Effects of Fire on Biodiversity"  on August 30. The webinar brings together experts, who will take participants on a journey through the effects of fire on ecology and diversity in the Arizona Sky Islands, the South American savanna, and north-central Appalachia. There are many talks scheduled at the Gwynne, including dealing with invasive species in ponds with Eugene Braig; Sarah Orlando will share about responsible recreation and The Ohio Clean Boater Program; Roger Williams and Jeff Hattey are talking carbon as it relates to woodlands (Williams) and its storage in urban soils (Hattey); Gabe Karns will discuss maple sugaring in changing times; and Marne Titchenell will provide an update on bats.

Join the CFAES School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR), and Environment & Natural Resources Alumni Society (ENRAS) in welcoming in the newest members of ENR Honorary 100 with an informal celebration and reception in the Lobby of Kottman Hall, Friday, September 30, 2022 from 3:00pm – 5:00pm. Light refreshments will be served.

We will be honoring our 2020 Inductees – catching up from the Covid pandemic by formally adding these outstanding individuals to the ENR Honorary 100 ranks. Come early to mingle at the reception to kick off an exciting 2022 Homecoming weekend. The induction ceremony will begin at 4:00pm.

Join the Soil Judging Team to get real, hands-on experience in soil pits and learn how to properly identify and categorize different soils. Graduate Students: Wooster Science Cafe: looking for graduate students and postdoc speaker

Would you like an opportunity to practice your science communication skills and share knowledge about your research area with the local community?

We are looking for 4-5 graduate students or post-docs to give brief, engaging talks about their area of research at The Wooster Science Café on Wednesday, Sept. 7th from 7-8pm at Spoon Market and Deli.

The Wooster Science Café is in its 10th year and is a forum to promote discussion about scientific topics of interest to the general public.

Please email (Lsirot@wooster.edu) as soon as possible if you are interested and we can discuss whether there is a topic that would be a good fit for you and for the café.
