The Sustainability Institute is pleased to announce the availability of two FY2025 funding opportunities aimed at supporting sustainability and resilience research at Ohio State. 

The Sustainability Proposal Development Grant Program supports the development of research teams pursuing large funding opportunities. Grant awards will range from $5,000 - $35,000 with proposals accepted on a rolling basis through June 1, 2025. Please see the full RFP with the application template before applying.

The Sustainability Research Seed Grant Program will fund research teams exploring topics in one or more of Ohio State’s eight sustainability impact areas. Average awards are expected to be about $25,000. Letters of intent are due by January 27, 2025 and full proposals are due by February 24, 2025. SI will host two virtual grant information sessions, at noon on December 13 and January 14, to provide a program overview and answer questions – RSVP for one of the sessions. 

Student senior capstone project posters were on display this week at the Environmental Professionals Network evening event and in Kottman Lobby for the Environmental Education Final Project Showcase. 

This week faculty member Jim Ippolito has been invited to speak with the Student Leadership Council of the National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Engineering Research Center for Advancing Sustainable and Distributed Fertilizer Production (CASFER). Dr. Ippolito will present, "Benefits of biosolids land application" and also invited to speak at the 2024 Area 5 Soil and Water Conservation Districts Winter Meeting in Circleville, OH, where he will present, Drought monitoring and management."

Students can apply now for scholarship support to attend classes at Stone Laboratory, The Ohio State University’s island campus on Lake Erie. Stone Lab offers college credit courses and workshops each summer on topics ranging from algae identification to aquatic biology, and credits are transferable to most colleges.

The deadline to apply for scholarships is February 15, 2025 for Ohio State students and March 28, 2025 for non-Ohio State students and high school students. 

Stone Lab classes, as part of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, provide students with a hands-on outdoor science experience in areas such as amphibians, birds, fish, local plants, and foundational knowledge about numerous Lake Erie ecosystems. 

Introductory courses are open to advanced high school students – sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have already taken biology – as well as to college undergraduates in any major, while the wide-variety of advanced level courses are ideal for science majors looking for practical experience in their chosen field.

“The value of a Stone Lab education is immeasurable, and that’s why we are dedicated to providing scholarships to as many students as we can,” said Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Laboratory director Dr. Chris Winslow.

2025 Ohio Section AWWA Scholarship Program

The OAWWA will award Undergraduate Graduate/Continuing Education scholarships for the 2024-2025 academic year. Eligible applicants are any student residing in Ohio and attending an Ohio-accredited institution of higher learning during the scholarship year, in a water industry-related program (i.e. science, engineering, management, computer information systems, or other water-related field). The scholarship award will be paid directly to the recipient’s program to be applied to tuition-related costs. Applications are due February 21, 2025.
