Celebrations

Four champions of Ohio's environment were recognized at the Environmental Professionals Network breakfast and field-tour event on June 5, 2023. Held on World Environment Day, the event recognized Jon Gerken, John O'Meara, Ric Queen (shown in featured photo above) and Dorothy Teater, who were inducted into the ENR Honorary 100. The Honorary 100 recognizes individuals with a special interest in the school, its programs and activities. Read more about the honorees. 

After the induction ceremony (and prior to the field tour of Waterman Agricultural and Natural Resources Laboratory), Bill Stanley, state director, The Nature Conservancy in Ohio, addressed the audience and spoke of the importance of natural resource management in Ohio and creating diverse partnerships to solve Ohio’s water, landscape, agricultural and forest conservation challenges. Funding

Faculty member Bill Peterman has received funding through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife to study Green Salamanders (Aneides aeneus). Read more about this project here.

Faculty members Steve Lyon and Yanlan Liu and Post Doctoral Scholar Hemendra Kumar have received funding for Pulling the Plug on Drought Risks: Automated Drainage Water Management (learn more about this project here) through the new AgTech Innovation Hub, which seeks to accelerate climate risk research. Faculty member Doug Jackson-Smith was awarded funding for "Enhancing Ecological Services through Agroecosystem Management on the Wooster Campus" through the annual Ohio State Energy Partners (OSEP) Awards | Learn more.

News

• HERE & NOW on NPR features a segment on the recent performances of oral histories, set up as eulogies in "Calling Hours." CALLING HOURS is a theatrical memorial written and performed to pay tribute to the generations of coal-energy production at AEP Conesville and to give voice to the loss of that way of life. Listen to a segment on the closure and performance on NPR's HERE & NOW by Julie Grant, The Allegheny Front with comments by faculty member Jeffrey Jacquet. 
• Researchers seeing climate change affect ice coverage on Lake Erie - Spectrum News (Ohio Sea Grant and Ohio State University Stone Laboratory Director Chris Winslow and others from Stone Lab)
• The Ohio Bird Conservation Initiative (Program Coordinator Matt Shumar) helped to coordinate a recent volunteer-driven sandhill crane count in Ohio. Read about the sandhill cranes and the count findings here.

Welcoming the Class of 2027 - Orientation is underway at Ohio State and in SENR for the class of 2027! Our academic team will host sessions all throughout June and July to help acquaint students with the university and SENR-specific information to get off to a great start!

June 29 - Forecast for HABs in Lake Erie 2023 - Stone Laboratory and Ohio Sea Grant at The Ohio State University will host a live web event for NOAA’s annual HABs Forecast for western Lake Erie from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET. In addition to the official forecast, the event will feature spring nutrient loading and projections along with expert commentary and highlights of recent research efforts and successes. | Details and registration

July 11 - EPN Breakfast - Breakfast with the Birds at the Grange Audubon Center - The Environmental Professionals Network (EPN) Breakfast and Summer Field Trip event will feature hands-on learning activities, networking, food, beverage, and birding at the Grange Insurance Audubon Center. Join this event to explore the places, spaces and people who are increasing community involvement in the outdoors, birding, and ecological restoration in central Ohio. The program and featured learning opportunities include faculty, staff and alumni of the SENR | Details and registration

Hypothesis Academy - The Hypothesis Academy will be running throughout the summer, including both the basic certification course and a new course focused on leveraging social annotation in the age of AI. Each asynchronous course culminates in a Hypothesis Certified Educator badge and certificate.

• Hypothesis Academy: Social Annotation 101 provides technical how-tos and social annotation teaching strategies for both new and experienced users. We have cohorts launching May 30, June 27, and August 1. Learn more and register for one of the cohorts here>>.
• Hypothesis Academy: Social Annotation in the Age of AI explores teaching strategies to use Hypothesis in conjunction with or as an attempt to subvert the use of AI writing tools in your courses. Hypothesis Summer Workshop Series - If you’re looking to further your Hypothesis knowledge, then join the Summer Workshop Series for a deep dive into social annotation! All users are welcome to attend - from social annotation beginners to experts.

If you register and attend all four of the below sessions, you’ll receive a Certificate of Attendance for the Summer 2023 Seminar in Social Annotation:

Call for Abstracts: 52nd Annual WMAO Meeting and Symposium

Water Management Association of Ohio (WMAO) 52nd annual meeting and symposium, themed "Water: Our Most Valuable Resource", will be held from November 7-8. Staff Artists and Makers Exhibition

Staff are encouraged to submit their work to the first annual Ohio State Staff Artists and Makers Exhibition. Do you paint, sew, knit, write, carve, make stained glass, create lighting installations, bake, make jewelry or ceramics or any other creative pursuit? Submit your work to the exhibition. Participants are limited to three pieces created in 2022-23. Exhibition will be Nov. 27-30 in the Great Hall of the Ohio Union. Submissions deadline is June 30. Notification of acceptance will be sent by July 31. Open to staff at all Ohio State campuses and colleges. Sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences Staff Advisory Council.

The ENRAS Executive Council is made up of 21 ENR Alumni with OSUAA Sustaining Membership. We currently have 7 remaining vacant positions. Starting in July 2023, the newly elected ENRAS Executive Council will vote to fill these positions with new executive council members that would serve a one-year term. You do not need to live in the greater Columbus area to be part of the ENRAS Executive Council.
