Transitions

After nearly 9 years with the School, Steve Culman's last day with SENR was June 17. Steve will join Washington State University to launch their first distinguished program serving potato agriculture in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences as its first Distinguished Endowed Chair in Soil Health for Potato Cropping Systems. Dedicated to on-farm research in partnership with farmers, Steve led a collective effort to revise the fertilizer recommendations for field crops as part of a three-state initiative during his time with us. Steve also worked to advance soil health methods and provided state-wide support with soils for OSU Extension.

Steve reflected, “I will always cherish my time in SENR. I’ve always felt fortunate to have such a supportive community of colleagues within SENR and throughout the college. I’m leaving OSU with lots of lessons learned and many fond memories. Thank you and all the best!“

Highlights and Happenings

SENR engaged youth at the recent Ohio 4-H Spark Expo

Ohio 4-H held a 3-day experience on campus for 8th grade students exploring careers in our college. Krystal Pocock (instructional staff) coordinated a hands-on invertebrate sampling workshop at the Chadwick lake and Esther DeBusk (academic recruitment staff) followed up with a discussion about both natural and social science career paths. June 30, 2022: 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. | Live web event hosted by Stone Laboratory and Ohio Sea Grant at The Ohio State University.

Experts from NOAA and their government and academic partners will discuss the 2022 Seasonal Forecast of Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB) for Lake Erie and Ohio’s response to excess nutrients and blooms during a free public webinar hosted by Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Laboratory. A Q&A session will follow the presentations.

The Good, The Bad, and The Hungry: Dealing with Wildlife Conflict

July 15, 2022, 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. | Ohio Woodland Stewards Program Workshop at Ohio State Mansfield

Are you having issues with wildlife (deer, rabbits, moles, voles, groundhogs, chipmunks…and the list goes on) in the garden or landscape? We will discuss ways to achieve a happy coexistence with these critters and others (raccoons, skunks, coyotes, and bats) at this workshop!

Join Marne Titchenell, Extension Wildlife Specialist in this workshop where she will identify wildlife damage from various species and discuss options to prevent and lessen conflict around the home. Come ready to share your questions/stories about pesky wildlife!

This class will be indoors. Lunch and materials are included in the class fee.

National Soil Moisture Workshop

The 2022 National Soil Moisture Workshop (August 9 - 10) provides a unique opportunity for leaders in soil moisture research and development to come together in an interactive format to exchange ideas, develop collaborations across their research areas and engage with the user community. This workshop will be hosted at The Ohio State University's Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center, in-person, with a limited virtual option.

Presentation abstract submission (via the registration form) deadline: July 1

Staff Leadership Series

The Women’s Place (TWP) is committed to expanding opportunities for women and underrepresented groups to grow their leadership and power at the university. To promote this goal, TWP sponsors the Staff Leadership Series (SLS), a year-long initiative that enables university staff members to enhance their leadership skills, effectiveness and career development. Participants meet bimonthly for group discussions, instruction from guest facilitators, and activities based in leadership and learning theory to encourage self-reflection and discovery.

The Women's Place strives to represent the university community’s diversity in the series and encourages people of all genders and identities to apply. Staff members must have at least two years of work experience at Ohio State by the application deadline to be eligible for the program.
