The School of Environment and Natural Resources Student Research Symposium is on Monday, March 27, 2023.

The full-day symposium boasts two oral presentation sessions with 10 student presenters and two poster sessions with more than 25 posters on display. The program is available here with full agenda and details, including titles of oral presentations and posters on-display. The symposium schedule may also be accessed here.

The Lantern published an article (available online here) written by Meghan Beery on the upcoming student led conference.

SENR Graduate Student Lily Mank's poster titled, Transformative Relationships with Nature: Exploring a Therapeutic Nature Photography Program for Vulnerable Adolescents won third place in the Education and Human Ecology division at the Hayes Advanced Research Forum on February 24, 2023. This poster represents an ongoing study of a therapeutic nature photography program for teens experiencing mental health crises at the residential treatment center, Northwest Passage, located in Wisconsin. 

CFAES Distinguished Seniors were recognized on March 22 at a reception and YouTube celebration. Please join SENR in congratulating Grace R. Gutierrez, Forestry, Fisheries and Wildlife; Airianna P. McGuire, Forestry, Fisheries and Wildlife; Donald Liam Nigro, Environment, Economy, Development and Sustainability; Mary Kate E. Rinderle, Environmental Science;  and Abigail Thiel, Environment, Economy, Development and Sustainability.

SENR Undergraduate Researcher Airianna P. McGuire received Honorable Mention at this year's Denman Undergraduate Research Forum in the Animal Sciences category for "An Evaluation of Tau Across Various Temperatures in Zebrafish (Danio Rerio)” held on March 7, 2023.

Faculty member Roger Williams has been appointed by the Office of International Affairs (OIA) at The Ohio State University to serve as one of the part-time senior advisors for the Global Gateways and connect with Ohio State’s 15 colleges and regional campuses to identify new partnership opportunities abroad. Dr. Williams will serve as the academic director for the China Gateway. Learn more about this appointment here.

Coyote 1288, is featured on the cover of National Geographic in three countries – Israel, Japan, and South Korea and appeared in the National Geographic article, “Wild animals are adapting to city life in surprisingly savvy ways (nationalgeographic.com).” Find out the story behind the image of Coyote 1288 from faculty member Stan Gehrt here.

Faculty member Shoshanah Inwood discusses the impact of lack of childcare on family income in NPR's  All Things Considered story "Child care demand outpaces supply. In rural U.S., there may be no supply."

Faculty member Kerry Ard is an investigator and part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers and Ohio-based community stakeholders on a newly funded project which seeks to gain a better understanding of how underserved communities in Ohio and beyond face disparate health outcomes stemming from interactions of stressors in the built, natural, physical and social environment. Darryl B. Hood, professor of environmental health sciences and Dean’s Fellow for Diversity, Equity and Inclusive Excellence will lead the project. | Read more

Celebrate Earth Day at this year’s Environmental Professionals Network (EPN) signature event on April 19. 

This year’s event, Art, agriculture, and advancing the relationship of Black people on land at the Fawcett Center brings together artists, urban farmers, and community organizers who use art as a means of inquiry into the intersection of environmental and social justice issues as well of stories of resilience. Registration is free with a dance performance by Brother(hood) Dance! followed by a conversation with Tiffany Bourgeois, assistant professor of Arts Management at The Ohio State University and Jera Oliver and Adrienne Williams, co-founders of Growing and Growth Collective, an organization where urban agriculture is used as a means of social action for improved health outcomes, deepened community engagement and economic empowerment with Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) in mind.

The Women’s Place is accepting applications for Critical Difference Professional Development Grants, which are designed to facilitate career mobility of staff, faculty and students. Grants of up to $1,000 will be awarded and may be used for professional travel, research, equipment, mentoring activities and more.

The award is open to staff and faculty who have been employed at Ohio State for at least one year, undergraduate students (sophomore and above), and full-time graduate/professional students.
Applications will be accepted through May 1, 2023. Please note that these awards differ from the Critical Difference research grants, which are due April 1.
