In the news

Faculty member Jeffrey Jacquet's interdisciplinary project examining the transition away from coal in Ohio is in the news again. Read about the project's current outreach and a culminating theatrical performance planned for May 2023 in the Coshocton Tribune.

Faculty member Kerry Ard was a panelist for a discussion on the intersecting questions about race, the environment, and the car.  Race, the Environment, and the Car was held on Nov. 16 and sponsored by the Department of History and The Ohio State Sustainability Institute and held in Sullivant Hall, The Barnett Center for Integrated Arts and Enterprise.

A new book, Organic Agriculture and Climate Change (published Nov. 3) is available. The book is authored by Klaus Lorenz and Rattan Lal and reviews and synthesizes information on how Organic Agriculture practices affect and are affected by climate change | Read more

December 7: Freshwater Science - The Value of Lake Erie Beaches with Dr. Brent Sohngen, who is working on determining the value of Lake Erie beaches to the state’s overall economy, and how that value is affected when water quality issues like harmful algal blooms occur. The webinar is free, but registration is required. | Learn and register

SENR is pleased to offer financial assistance for full-time, undergraduate SENR majors to participate in OSU sponsored, credit-bearing global education programs related to the environment and sustainability. Students may apply for the SENR Global Education Scholarship prior to completing a global education application with the Office of International Affairs. For Students: ODNR Summer 2023 Internship Opportunites
With some of the most diverse career opportunities in state government, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is inviting college students to apply for the next round of summer internships.  Students throughout the state can apply for a 2023 internship through December 9. ODNR expects to hire 60 interns covering a variety of fields including biology, communications, engineering, forestry, geology, law enforcement, recreation, water quality, wildlife, and more. Sustainability Research Seed Grant Program proposals
The Sustainability Institute (SI) is pleased to announce a request for proposals for the FY2023 Sustainability Research Seed Grant Program. Proposals must take an interdisciplinary approach and consider components and interactions of both human (social, behavioral, economic, or engineered) and natural (earth, environmental, or ecological) systems. SI will hold two sustainability research funding office hours open to all researchers considering submitting to one of SI’s research grant programs. Attendees are welcome to drop in at any time during the hour.

The Translational Data Analytics Institute and partners in the Interdisciplinary Research Enabling Initiative are accepting a variety of proposals for research funding and in-kind support, including research pilots, project planning, and proposal development. Research pilot letters of intent are due Dec. 15; other deadlines are rolling.

Applications are open for the annual OSEP awards
In collaboration with Ohio State Energy Partners (OSEP), the Office of Academic Affairs has opened a call for grant proposals that align with the university's sustainability goals; advance diversity, equity and inclusion goals; or provide research opportunities to students who have had limited exposure to undergraduate research and experiential learning opportunities. Submissions are due Feb. 10, 2023. Faculty, staff and students are eligible to apply. Awards range from $10,000 to $50,000.
