Featured Image below: On Oct. 7, 2022, SENR students attended the Careers in Carbon Management Student-Alumni Networking Luncheon to meet and learn from SENR alums Marie McConnell (EPDM ’19), Imby Abath (EEDS ’19), and Rebecca Mellino (EEDS ’15).

Several SENR faculty will participate in the 2022 Interdisciplinary Fall Forum hosted by the Translational Data Analytics Institute and the Sustainability Institute at Ohio State.

• Doug Jackson-Smith, professor is a panelist in the Implementing Land-based Climate Solutions session moderated by Robyn Wilson, professor 

Representatives from the Environmental and Social Sustainability (ESS) Lab will also be in attendance and available as a resource to discuss their work during the luncheon. Student research posters will be on display on Tuesday, Nov. 8 and during the morning of Nov. 9.  
Note: Graduate students doing interdisciplinary research and senior undergrads producing an interdisciplinary thesis are eligible to participate in the Interdisciplinary Research Fall Forum poster session. Research featured must be interdisciplinary, and poster presenters are required to attend the judging session Tuesday, Nov. 8, 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided. Distinguished University Professor Rattan Lal recently earned India’s prestigious Padma Shri award for his innovative research and sustainable farming practices that address food insecurity and mitigate climate change. Padma Shri is India’s fourth highest civilian honor and recognizes individuals for their distinguished service in any field.  Lal was recognized in the Science and Engineering category for pioneering a method of farming called soil sequestration, a technique that restores nutrients to the soil by trapping them in the ground. Soil sequestration also prevents carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere, which leads to reduced carbon emissions.

October 24: SENR Internship Forum, Kottman Hall 1st Floor Lobby, 1:45-5pm. Stop by and learn about summer internship experiences of our students at the 2022 SENR Internship Poster Forum! SENR students will be showing posters about their summer internships on Monday, Oct. 24 in the Kottman 1st Floor Lobby. October 26: Invasive Plants: ID, Removal and What's Next - This class will cover identification and removal options for some invasive plants that many of us deal with day in and day out.  Once you know what it is and how to get rid of it what should you do next?  We will cover options for dealing with the site after removal of the invasives and discuss plant options as well.  Learn more | register

October 29: The first Ohio Bat Festival (during Bat Week) from 12 - 5 pm at the Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center (2201 Fred Taylor Dr, Columbus, OH 43210) featuring exciting multimedia presentations, family-friendly activities, and interesting exhibits highlighting the ecology, diversity, and conservation of bats in Ohio and worldwide. The event is free and nature enthusiasts of all ages are invited! The event is sponsored by the Carter Lab in EEOB, and the OSU Ecology and Evolution Club. Marne Titchenell is one of the multimedia presenters! 

October 29: A day in Yellow Springs with SENR Peer Mentors. The excursion includes a 6-mile hike in the Clifton Gorge/John Bryan State Park, free time in Yellow Springs (lunch on your own), and a stop at Young's Jersey Dairy on the way home. 

October 30: Film screening hosted by the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association policy program of Kiss The Ground, a 2020 film unpacking the ways in which soil may be the key to combating climate change with SENR faculty member Scott Demyan and graduate student (and assistant coach for Ohio State's Soil Judging Team) Margaret Borders as discussion panelists.

Australia: Human Impacts on the Natural Environment
Students on the Australia: Human Impacts on the Natural Environment program spend 3.5 weeks during summer term in North Queensland, Australia, surveying environmental issues including water scarcity and quality, the impacts of rising ocean temperatures, wildlife conservation, and more. The group examines conservation and restoration efforts while snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef, hikes in the Wet Tropics Rainforest, studies the agricultural and mining industries, and learns about the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities pre- and post-colonization.  Attend one of the upcoming information sessions to learn more!

SENR Education Abroad Scholarship
SENR is pleased to offer financial assistance for full-time, undergraduate SENR majors to participate in OSU sponsored, credit-bearing global education programs related to the environment and sustainability. Students may apply for the SENR Global Education Scholarship prior to completing a global education application with the Office of International Affairs. International Research and Scholarship Grant
Proposals are sought from faculty, graduate and undergraduate students for a wide range of international projects that can be implemented on campus and around the globe. International Research and Scholarship Grant projects can address critical issues in regional context; advance disciplinary and/or interdisciplinary methods; implement collaborative/inclusive research scholarship and exchange in diverse settings; explore area studies; and research global education that enhances equity, and racial justice, to engages the state, the nation and the world. Proposal deadline is November 18, 2022.

Global Teaching and Learning Grant
The Office of International Affairs, the Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning and the Office of Technology and Digital Innovation are sponsoring a faculty grant competition to develop internationally focused learning and cultural exchanges at Ohio State, using a variety of platforms and mediums. Proposals are sought for initiating new and inclusive global teaching to internationalize the learning experiences and impact students beyond the traditional classroom or study abroad. The Office of Service-Learning is pleased to announce the Community-Engaged/Service-Learning Course Development Grants program for the 2022-2023 academic year. These grants of up to $4,000 are available to any Ohio State instructor who would like to develop or improve a community-based course. This includes courses offered at regional campuses and undergraduate or graduate level courses. Courses can be delivered in-person, online, or a hybrid - whatever works best for you and your community partner.
