Featured Image above: The Ohio Woodland Stewards Program and the Terrestrial Wildlife and Ecology Lab partnered with ODNR’s Division of Wildlife to host two wild turkey management workshops. The first was a day-long workshop for natural resources professionals and the second was an evening workshop for landowners. Both workshops focused on the ecology of Ohio’s wild turkey populations and how to manage their habitat. There were 90 natural resource professionals in attendance at the first workshop, and 27 landowners at the evening workshop.

Faculty member Shoshanah Inwood is a 2022 Faculty Fellow with the North Central Regional Center for Rural Development (NCRCRD). As a NCRCRD Fellow Dr. Inwood will lead the 2023 NCRCRD Caregiving Survey to better understand how caregiving currently intersects with and affects community and economic development in the North Central Region. | Read more

Student essays on religion and environmental values published

A new book published by The Ohio State University Pressbooks, Emerging Perspectives on Religion and Environmental Values in America is available and in use as a companion textbook for ENR 3470 - Religion and Environmental Values in America taught by faculty member Greg Hitzhusen. The book is a student-written collaboration by students, who were formerly enrolled in the course with each one of the chapters beginning as a term paper in the course. | Read more about the new book and how collaborating with students has enhanced understanding of the field.

The Ohio Bat Working Group and Five Rivers MetroParks hosted their first ever summer Bat Blitz!

Over two nights in late August, nine teams set up mist nets to capture bats in various locations around Germantown MetroPark. The goal of the blitz was to survey in a short period of time Ohio bat populations, especially in areas of the state where information is lacking, such as Southwest Ohio. | Read more about how it went with Wildlife Program Specialist Marne Titchenell in Bat Blitz nets wins for conservation research and habitat management

There are many talks scheduled at the Gwynne, including dealing with invasive species in ponds with Eugene Braig; Sarah Orlando will share about responsible recreation and The Ohio Clean Boater Program; Roger Williams and Jeff Hattey are talking carbon as it relates to woodlands (Williams) and its storage in urban soils (Hattey); Gabe Karns will discuss maple sugaring in changing times; and Marne Titchenell will provide an update on bats.

October 14: Fascinating Woodland Fungi
Fungi of many types can be found in every woodlot throughout Ohio.  They get overlooked, ignored and/or avoided by visitors to the woods because people don’t know what they are, have limited knowledge, or have been misinformed as to their importance or dangers. Fungi are quite intriguing once one gets to know them, their life histories, their ecological importance and their diversity. Come join us for a day in the woods of learning what these fascinating organisms are and the beauty they possess.| Details and registration

Join the CFAES School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR), and Environment and Natural Resources Alumni Society (ENRAS) to welcome the newest members of the ENR Honorary 100 with an informal celebration and reception in the first-floor lobby of Kottman Hall, Friday, Sept. 30, 2022, 3–5 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. This is a FREE event, but we request that you register from the link below.

We will be honoring our 2020 inductees and catching up from the COVID-19 pandemic by formally adding these outstanding individuals to the ENR Honorary 100 ranks. Come early to mingle at the reception and kick off an exciting 2022 Homecoming Weekend. The induction ceremony will begin at 4 p.m.

Automated transcriptions in Mediasite

Starting this semester, a new feature has been added to Mediasite that allows you to add automated transcriptions to your recordings. From the MyMediasite Portal, you can select any of your presentations to add automated transcriptions. Keep in mind, in order for your presentations to be considered fully accessible, you will still need to review the automated transcriptions and make any corrections for accuracy.

Virtual Desktop Now Available for Instructors and Students

Virtual Desktop allows instructors and students to virtually access a select set of software applications from anywhere with internet access. This cloud access enables extended use of these applications for students outside of physical lab spaces and allows instructors to provide the same coursework for both in-person and remote learning. Sustainability Proposal Development Grant Program

The Sustainability Institute announces a request for proposals for the FY2023 Sustainability Proposal Development Grant Program. This funding mechanism will support teams in the development of external funding proposals relating to one or more of the Sustainability Institute research program areas. Proposals must take an interdisciplinary approach and clearly consider key components and interactions of both human and natural systems. To be eligible, the target funding opportunity must have a submission date on or before Dec. 31, 2024. Proposals are accepted on a rolling basis. | Learn more

2022 International Photography Competition - an annual competition from The Office of International Affairs at Ohio State
All Ohio State students, faculty, staff, visiting scholars and alumni are invited to submit their photos to the 2022 International Photography Competition. Entries will be accepted through October 6. This is a wonderful opportunity to share your original photographs from around the world. In addition to honoring the Best in Show, first, second and third place winners will be selected in the following categories: People, Places and Arts & Culture. There will also be People's Choice awards for the photos that receive the highest votes via an online voting phase.
