SENR Announcements

SENR graduate student Isaiah Franco has been awarded funding through the North Central Region - Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (NCR-SARE) 2024 Graduate Student Grant Program to study the social and economic wellbeing outcomes among residents, farmworkers, and farmers in Ohio depending on the composition of the local farm labor force, by comparing three communities which utilize temporary and settlement based agricultural labor to different extents. Congratulations, Isaiah on this grant award!

Congratulations to Greg Lipps, who has been appointed as The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium's first Conservation Biologist, a newly-created position that underscores the Zoo’s ongoing commitment to biodiversity and wildlife conservation. This expands the Zoo’s significant partnership with The Ohio State University focusing on the protection of species, habitats, and ecosystems. Congratulations to the ENR Alumni Society (ENRAS), who achieved the Scarlet Level Outstanding Society Award for 2024!  

This upcoming week is a gap week for the SENR Seminar Series but we'll be back on Sept. 24 with six second year Masters students presenting lightning talks. The SENR Seminar Series is a great opportunity to hear from graduate students about their research, engage with invited speakers, have a snack and connect with colleagues! Plan to join seminar early (starting at 3:45 p.m.) on the day of talks to mingle and enjoy a snack prior to taking your seats! We've added a few photos from the series so far here.

ICYMI - At the end of August student leaders in the SENR Ambassadors and the ENR Scholars Leadership Council spent the day at Griggs Reservoir for a joint retreat to prepare for the upcoming academic year. The day was packed full with a scavenger hunt, a nature-based art activity, productive working time, and professional development. SENR Ambassadors are the outward facing student representatives of the school and primarily assist with recruitment efforts by sharing their stories and experiences as SENR students. Members of the ENR Scholars Leadership Council plan and execute all scholars events to help foster community among students in the program. See photo below of their retreat.

ICYMI - Students shared their internship experiences at the annual forum in Kottman Lobby with other students. A recap of the event is available on our website with guidance on what students can do next to continue along with their professional development journey. 

ICYMI - At Ohio State Mansfield a workshop was held on Sept. 5 led by John Thrasher and Kate Shannon, with the OSU Mansfield Department of Art and Gabe Karns and Marne Titchenell. Attendees learned about a historic photographic process, explored the campus woodlands, and created impressions of nature. "One of the coolest aspects of the cyanotype process is its interdisciplinary nature, beautifully blending science and art," Marne shared. Select cyanotypes created during the workshop will be featured in Where Darkness and Light are Blue and White, an Exhibition of Cyanotypes at the Pearl Conard Art Gallery from September 16 - December 4, 2024 with a public reception on September 16 from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. Details available here >>

Lead image: The Environmental & Social Sustainability Lab got together for their annual Fall gathering on Sunday, September 8. Over 40 people were in attendance including graduate students, staff, faculty, and families. Between games of cornhole and croquet, there was a round of introductions for the incoming students. The Environmental & Social Sustainability Lab is staffed by a core group of affiliated faculty, students, and research staff representing a range of social sciences with a focus on the environment and natural resources.

Share with students - Stone Lab's Fish Sampling Techniques Workshop

An intensive, two-day workshop designed to demonstrate the fish-sampling gears most commonly used by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources-Division of Wildlife (ODW) and Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA) for undergraduate students interested in seasonal agency work and fisheries biology professions. Stone Lab, ODW, and OEPA biologists provide hands-on experience with fyke nets, gill nets, trawls, and boat-based as well as wading electrofishing methods. Offered over one weekend early in autumn semester.

Workshop registration is first-come, first-served and limited to 9 participants. Preference will be given to undergraduate college students until September 5. Participants will not receive college credit.

Workshop fee includes room and meals.
