The 2025 Annual Friends of Stone Lab Open House is scheduled for September 6, 2025 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Stone Laboratory. This event is free of charge and registration is not required.

Stone Lab is The Ohio State University’s six-acre island campus in Put-in-Bay harbor and the oldest freshwater biological field station in the United States. Stone Laboratory is the research, education, and outreach facility of Ohio Sea Grant, which is part of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Sea Grant, and part of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) School of Environment and Natural Resources.

We are happy to announce that 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of Stone Laboratory at Gibraltar Island! We invite you to celebrate with us. Thank you for supporting our research, education, and outreach programs and we look forward to the next century of Lake Erie Science at The Ohio State University.

Activities:

  • Tour of Gibraltar Island
  • Lectures and laboratory sessions
  • Summer class information and publications
  • Tour of the historic South Bass Island Lighthouse (transportation not provided)

Getting There:

To get to South Bass Island, you can take either the Miller Boat Line or Jet Express Ferry. You are responsible for all ground transportation to and from Ohio State University’s research docks. Free transportation to Gibraltar Island will be provided from Ohio State’s research docks on South Bass Island. The last trip to Gibraltar Island is at 3:30 p.m., the last boat off Gibraltar Island is at 4:00 p.m. Or, if it is more convenient, you can pay for water taxi services from Put-In-Bay to Gibraltar Island at the Boardwalk Restaurant.
