Addressing the Challenges and Opportunities of a Rapidly Changing Arctic: Role of the Arctic Council

Jul 13, 2016 (All day)

The Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center will host a discussion on Addressing the Challenges and Opportunities of a Rapidly Changing Arctic: Role of the Arctic Council with Admiral Robert J. Papp, Jr., USCG (Ret.), U.S. Special Representative for the Arctic and Ambassador Kåre R. Aas, Norwegian Ambassador to the U.S. This discussion will be held in 240 Scott Hall.

For the last 20 years, the Arctic Council has acted as the only circumpolar, intergovernmental forum for political discussions regarding the Arctic region and its inhabitants. The Council, which is made up of the 8 Arctic States, the region’s Indigenous Peoples, and numerous accredited Observers, has helped address many of the relevant issues faced by this rapidly changing environment. The United States is currently serving as the Chair of the Arctic Council and in May 2017 will pass this role to Finland.  This discussion will provide an opportune moment to learn about the challenges and opportunities of working and living in this unique region, the goals of the Council moving forward, and why the Arctic is an area of importance for all U.S. citizens. Join us for a unique opportunity to discuss with the U.S. Special Representative to the Arctic, Admiral Robert J. Papp, Jr., USCG (Ret.), and the Norwegian Ambassador to the U.S., Kåre R. Aas, our role in the Arctic, our ties to the other member nations, and the opportunities we have to ensure the safe and sustainable development of this region and its peoples.
