Breaking a Fixed System: Corporations, Fracking, and the Community Rights Movement in Ohio

Nov 17, 2015, 12:00pm - 1:00pm
Location:
William B. Saxbe Law Auditorium, Drinko Hall

Thomas Linzey, Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund, will talk about communities across Ohio that are beginning to defy state and federal law by banning fracking for natural gas and pipelines; and how their work is the beginning of a community rights movement in Ohio and the United States. Linzey will talk about how the current structure of law divests communities of being able to decide their own futures, and how their constitutional right of local, community self-government has been ignored by both the state legislature and Ohio courts. He will talk about how Ohio communities have created the Ohio Community Rights Network and how that Network is now working to change the Ohio Constitution to guarantee the right of self-government to all Ohioans. Co-hosts are the Ohio 2015 Community Rights Tour and the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund.
