Privatizing Public Drinking Water Utilities – Can the Public’s Interest Still be Protected?

With a possible federal emphasis on infrastructure, and possible greater emphasis on public-private partnerships, it is timely to focus on experiences in Ohio and beyond with varying degrees of privatizing public drinking water utilities. Less than 5% of Ohio’s public drinking water is supplied by private, investor-owned utilities. That number is higher in some other countries. Less developed countries often struggle to meet the public’s drinking water needs, and some financially-challenged cities in the US do too. Still, is affordable drinking water a basic human right that government must give a high priority to providing? When communities consider private partnerships, what guidelines might be useful? Attend this EPN program and join the discussion of these critical matters.
