Graduate Exit Seminar - Abdelmatloub Omar
Plan to join Abdelmatloub Omar's graduate exit seminar on December 14, 2023, at 11:30 am in Kottman Hall 245 or via Zoom. Omar will present, "Statistical Identification of the Best Representative Examples of a Common Soil Series Using Environmental Covariates."
Abstract: In soil survey and mapping, representative soil profiles (pedons) are used to characterize the properties of the soil series. In soil survey, surveyors use conceptual (mental) model for correlating soil with landforms and other soil forming factors for designating the representative soil profiles of a soil series, therefore, collecting data for soil survey is conducted based on surveyor’s interpretation of the landscape.
Given the complexity of the landscape and the spatial variation in soil properties, designating the representative soil profiles may not be an easy task. It is an expensive and time-consuming process, as well. In the present study, a statistical-spatial model was developed to determine the locations of the best representative examples of Blount soil series.
