Graduate Exit Seminar - Iresha Jayasinghe
Plan to join Iresha Jayasinghe's graduate exit seminar on April 4, 2025, at 8:00 am in Kottman Hall, Room 333C or via Zoom. Iresha will present, "Environmentalism Through an International Lens: Examining Asian College Student Perspectives on Connection to Nature and Pro-Environmental Behaviors"
Abstract: Understanding human connection to nature (CN) and pro-environmental behaviors (PEB) is crucial for addressing human-induced environmental challenges. However, research in the U.S. on CN and PEB primarily focuses on domestic residents and racial and ethnic majorities, leaving international communities, particularly international students, largely understudied. This study addresses this gap by exploring CN and PEB among Asian international college students at The Ohio State University (OSU). Through interviews, students shared their nature-based experiences, cultural influences on CN and PEB, changes in engagement after immigrating to the U.S., and barriers to participation. Findings highlighted strong cultural ties to nature, advantages of nature for well-being, and several obstacles to engagement. These insights are valuable for university administrators and stakeholders seeking to enhance international students' well-being and environmental engagement. Furthermore, this research provides a foundation for future studies on historically underrepresented international communities in the fields of nature connection and PEB.
