Graduate Exit Seminar - Kaleb Lee
Plan to join Kaleb Lee's graduate exit seminar on June 10, 2025, at 1:00 pm via Zoom. Kaleb will present, "Deeper than Roots: Exploring Youth Perspectives on Urban Ecology through Creative Expression"
Abstract: This research seminar explores how urban gardens can function as vibrant learning spaces where youth build community, express themselves creatively, and engage with environmental education outside of school. Centered at a youth garden in Columbus, Ohio, the study investigates how poetry, spoken word, and other arts-based activities can deepen young people’s connection to social and ecological justice. Using interviews, observation, and participatory research, the project highlights how integrating art and hands-on learning fosters youth empowerment, cultural relevance, and care for place. Findings support a model of environmental education that centers youth voice, lived experience, and creative expression as tools for social transformation.
