Scholarly Seminar - Abdelmatloub Omar

Plan to join Abdelmatloub Omar's scholarly seminar on December 27, 2023, at 11:00 am in Kottman Hall 245. Omar will present, "The soils of Libya: A review."

Abstract: This presentation comes in the context of exchanging knowledge about the soil resource and targets specifically the soils in Libya. Libya is located in the arid and semi-arid regions of the world with total land area of about 180 million hectares and a population of about 6 million. Libya’s climate is dominantly influenced by both the Mediterranean Sea in the northern regions and the desert in the southern regions. Thus, most of the soils are undeveloped or only partially developed due to limited weathering. The influence of climate, topography, geology, and vegetation cover over time results in the formation of six soil orders in Libya. These include Aridisols, Entisols, Alfisols, Mollisols, Inceptisols, and Vertisols. Through this presentation, I will cover the history of soil survey in Libya, the soil forming factors, the soil types at lower taxonomic levels, and the most important limitations affecting the Libyan soils for the agricultural use.
