SENR Seminar Series
The SENR Seminar Series welcomes Monica White, Assistant Professor of Environmental Justice, Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies and the Department of Community and Environmental Sociology, University of Wisconsin-Madison. She will present Freedom Farmers: Urban Agriculture and Rebuilding Detroit in 103 Kottman Hall.
Many current conversations on the topic of urban agriculture focus on the City of Detroit. With acres of available land and difficulty accessing healthy food for the city’s most vulnerable populations, residents are returning to a rich agricultural tradition. Using a lens of Community Resilience and Collective Agency, this presentation will offer historical analysis of agriculture in Detroit and other community-based food systems with particular attention to the work of Black farmers and the impact of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network.
