Transnational Amenity Migration to Costa Rica: Are Ticos and Amenity Migrants Getting Along and in Tune in Regards to the Natural Environment?

Apr 7, 2016, 4:00pm - 5:30pm
Location:
164 Howlett Hall to 123 Williams Hall

The SENR Spring 2016 Seminar Series welcomes David Matarrita-Cascante, Associate Professor, Texas A&M University, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, who will present Transnational Amenity Migration to Costa Rica: Are Ticos and Amenity Migrants Getting Along and in Tune in Regards to the Natural Environment?

Many rural communities in Latin America, particularly those rich in natural amenities, are experiencing rapid sociodemographic change. As migrants from other countries move seasonally or permanently to these communities, their social, physical and economic landscapes are changed. Given the limited resources often characteristic of rural communities in Latin America, it is important to understand the capacities that such communities have, through their own residents, to cope with the changes brought up by amenity migration. This study intends to respond to two overarching questions: 1) What is the nature of the interaction between Costa Ricans (also known as Ticos) rural residents and amenity migrants? and 2) How are members of each group dealing with the natural environment? Findings expose the nature of interaction between groups as well as the different ways in which they see the environment and protect it in addition to explanations (e.g. causes) to these findings.

The SENR Spring 2016 Seminar begins at 4:10 p.m. in 164 Howlett Hall. CarmenConnect into 123 Williams Hall will be made available.
