Location:
103 Kottman Hall, 2021 Coffey Road, Columbus OH 43210
Dr. Campbell will present Maji Marwa: bringing water to Marwa and managing the social, cultural, environmental and economic impacts at the September 28 SENR Seminar Series.

The SENR Seminar Series welcomes Joe Campbell,  Lecturer and 2016-2017 U.S. Fulbright Scholar, School of Environment and Natural Resources, The Ohio State University, and School of Social Sciences, University of Dodoma, Tanzania.  He will present Maji Marwa: bringing water to Marwa and managing the social, cultural, environmental and economic impacts  in 103 Kottman Hall.

Today in a few small pockets of Tanzania one can say the word “Maji” and hear in response “Marwa!” Such is the call for water, solidarity and shared purpose at Ohio State, the University of Dodoma and in the semi-arid village of Marwa of the Same District, Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania. This seminar will be a collection of stories and lessons learned from Dr. Campbell's experience as a U.S. Fulbright Scholar at the University of Dodoma and in launching the Sustainable and Resilient Tanzanian Community (SRTC) program (on Facebook here), a partnership between the people of Marwa Village, the Kilimanjaro Hope Organization, University of Dodoma, and Ohio State’s School of Environment and Natural Resources and the Department of Civil, Environment and Geodetic Engineering. The SRTC program is an exceptional, interdisciplinary undergraduate education and global service-learning experience that addresses the complex challenges and opportunities of sustainable development in rural Tanzania, grounded in a values-based participatory community development model. This seminar will introduce and detail aspects of our approach to development, which we characterize as values-based, that is not top-down, nor bottom-up, it is about connecting the humanity and working from a position of shared values.

The presentation will be available through Carmen Connect.
