The spring SENR Speaker Series welcomes H. Thomas Bartlett (Tom), a Research Associate with the Department of Ornithology, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, retired secondary science teacher (31+ years), licensed bird bander with the US Geological Survey (55 years), certified bird bander and trainer under the North American Banding Council, who will discuss "Bird Banding: A Tool for Studying Ohio's Birds." Tom's talk will explain what bird banding is, his research efforts and some results. The talk will start at 4:00 p.m. in room 103 Kottman Hall or via Zoom.

H. Thomas Bartlett (Tom); Research Associate with the Department of Ornithology, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, retired secondary science teacher (31+ years), licensed bird bander with the US Geological Survey (55 years), certified bird bander and trainer under the North American Banding Council, published dozens of papers and one book. Married, Paula, who also now works with him on the research, and one daughter, Laura, a teacher in the Cleveland area. Hobbies(?) – birding, travel, fishing, hunting, and golf. Paula and Tom currently spend 4-5 months a year on the Lake Erie Islands banding birds and another 25-30+ days a year banding at Springville Marsh State Nature Preserve. In October 2021, Tom banded a Northern Saw-whet Owl on Kelleys Island which was his 100,000th bird banded since beginning in 1971. He and his banding team have banded over 1400 Northern Saw-whet Owls on Kelleys Island alone. And over 55,000 birds on the Lake Erie Islands. This data has been used to protect over 200 acres of land on the Lake Erie Islands.
