SENR Speaker Series welcomes Dr. Maria N. Miriti

The SENR Speaker Series welcomes Dr. Maria N. Miriti, professor, Department of Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology, The Ohio State University. Dr. Miriti will present, "Ecology, Social Science, and Environmental Justice."

Abstract: During the 20th century, ecology expanded from a discipline that emphasized abiotic and biotic processes in pristine systems to one that includes consideration of human impacts on these processes beginning with conservation- and restoration ecology, and urban ecology.  The Sustainable Biosphere Initiative in the early 1990s initiated consideration of socio-ecological systems that have since gained traction in ecology. However, the human aspect in these systems is interpreted differently among social scientists and ecologists.  Notably, ecological engagement with questions of ecological justice is low.  Interdisciplinary collaboration can improve understanding of the social, biological, and biophysical components that comprise socio-ecological systems.  In this talk, I will highlight impactful interdisciplinary collaborations that represent increased ecological contributions to justice research, and advocate for opportunities to integrate place-based cultural knowledge into ecological inquiry.
