Discover all there is to know about Ohio owls at Owl Prowl - a family friendly evening event!
Owl crafts, tasty hot drinks and educational activities planned
“With winter being mating season for several Ohio owl species this is an excellent time to host this event, said Marne Titchenell, wildlife program director for Ohio State University Extension in the School of Environment and Natural Resources. “This is best done during early winter as it is mating season for several Ohio species. Early winter is best as come late winter, the females will be on eggs, and we don’t want to disturb them during that time.”
Titchenell will be joined by Carrie Brown, agriculture and natural resources educator with OSU Extension, Fairfield County. OSU Extension is the outreach arm of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences. The pair are hopeful (weather pending) that participants will be able to meet the Owl Ambassadors – so that participants can see and learn firsthand about Ohio wildlife. Owl Ambassadors are part of a rehabilitation program led by Ohio Nature Education.
“We will attempt to call in owls with owl calls and hope they either call back, or fly close to us to investigate the call,” Titchenell said. “We will try to call in barred owls and screech owls for sure. Maybe great-horned owls, too.”
Owls are popular
“Owls are a popular topic - registration is close to capacity for this event, but we hope to make this an annual offering to share their important role,” said Titchenell. “Most folks appreciate them and enjoy the rare glimpses they get of them.”
