SENR Q&A with Erin Baer, undergraduate recruitment and student engagement specialist

Applications to join the SENR Ambassador program are due March 14, 2025

SENR: What is the SENR Ambassador program?

Erin: SENR Ambassadors serve as representatives of the school for outreach and public events. Students in this program primarily assist with undergraduate recruitment activities by sharing their student experience and involvements during campus visits and information sessions.

Interested in joining SENR? Join us for an information session to learn more about the five majors offered by Ohio State’s School of Environment and Natural Resources.  Our information sessions will include career pathways for each major, education abroad opportunities, financial aid, honors, and information about the ENR Scholars program and the SUSTAINS Learning Community.  Each session includes plenty of time for questions and answers as well--we encourage visitors to come with questions!

SENR: How does being an ambassador enrich students or contribute to their growth and development?

Erin: SENR Ambassadors have the opportunity to participate in professional development activities at the program's monthly meetings.

For example, Ambassadors connected with staff from the National Park Service in Autumn 2024 to learn about navigating the application process for federal jobs and pathways toward public lands opportunities.

Additionally, the nature of campus visits and the questions prospective students ask encourage Ambassadors to reflect on their own student experience. This process is great practice for job interviews!

SENR:  What’s next for our Ambassadors?

Erin:  This spring, Ambassadors will be partnering with the Environmental Professionals Network (EPN) to provide a student perspective at these events.

Specifically, this partnership with EPN will allow an Ambassador to provide their thoughts on the program topic and introduce the keynote speaker at each event.

SENR Ambassadors also write cards to prospective students to share opportunities or involvements that have had a meaningful impact on their experience here at Ohio State.

As a former student and SENR alumna myself, I remember the impact receiving a handwritten card from a current student had on my college decision process. It is really special to continue this tradition with Ambassadors and inspire the future students of SENR.

SENR: Is there anything unique about being an SENR Ambassador?

Erin:  I think the program offers a special community for students who are looking to connect more with the school as a whole and other SENR students.

Often, Ambassadors are some of the most involved students in the school who have had unique and well-rounded experiences both inside and outside of the classroom. It is energizing to hear about their involvements and career aspirations and makes me feel really hopeful about the future of the environmental field. The group is full of individuals who I know will be changemakers in the future.

SENR:  How do students interested in becoming an Ambassador learn more?

Students interested in joining SENR Ambassadors should contact Erin Baer.169 or fill out the application which is due March 14, 2025. To learn more about the current Ambassadors, check out their bios online!
