Tribute to Dr. Bill Mitsch

Feb. 17, 2025

We in the School of Environment and Natural Resources and the Wilma H. Schiermeier Olentangy River Wetland Research Park are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Bill Mitsch, former faculty member in the School and the founder and first Director of the Olentangy River Wetlands. A highly regarded, and distinguished professor, Dr. Mitsch pioneered the study of wetland ecology and ecological engineering. In 1992, he established the Olentangy River Wetland Research Park, a one-of-a-kind teaching, research, and outreach facility focused on the importance of water and wetlands to society.  For his extraordinary achievements as a researcher, educator, and advocate for wetlands, he was awarded the prestigious Stockholm Water Prize in 2004. In 2008, Dr. Mitsch successfully led an effort to have the Wetlands designated a Wetland of International Importance by Ramsar, one of only 41 such sites in the United States and the only one in Ohio. Because of his leadership and vision, the Wetlands will continue to be a legacy of his dedication to science, conservation, and education for years to come here at The Ohio State University. We are holding the Mitsch family close in our thoughts and wishing them comfort and peace during this difficult time.
