Take classes, attend a workshop, conduct real, in-the-field research that matters, work on the island while you are taking classes and so much more. Here is what a few Instructors and Mentors are saying about Stone Lab experiences.
"The Great Lakes face big ecological challenges and understanding them means looking at both the science and the policies that shape how we use and protect our natural resources. That’s what makes Stone Laboratory such a powerful place to learn." – Dr. Harrison Fried, instructor at Stone Lab and REU mentor
Students step outside of the classroom
"At Stone Lab, students get more than classroom knowledge—they dive into real issues facing the Great Lakes alongside leading researchers and passionate peers." – Dr. Harrison Fried, instructor at Stone Lab and REU mentor
Mentorship that lasts a lifetime

"Stone Lab holds a special place in the hearts of so many of us, and that’s largely because of the mentors and friends we find there. I was fortunate to learn from three remarkable professors on the island: Dr. Vandergoot, who guided me through a walleye spawning‑mortality project with ODNR; Dr. Simon, who opened my eyes to the world of ichthyology; and Dr. Winslow, whose Aquatic Biology course taught me why biodiversity is necessary. Their mentorship continues to influence my work and my connection to Stone Lab today."— Dr. Zachary Steffensmeier, 2026 Stone Lab REU Mentor and Stone Lab Instructor
Meaningful research with top scientists
"The Stone Lab’s REU program pairs talented college students who aspire to do research with top scientists in the Great Lakes area. Over eight weeks, REU students carry out a complete research project, starting with developing a research question, designing an experimental plan, collecting data, and delivering a final presentation to their peers. Many REU students pursue graduate school or start careers in STEM. The location of Stone Lab’s REU program, on Gibraltar Island, makes the experience more special compared to campus-based research programs." — Dr. Justin Chaffin (shown in lead image with a student), senior researcher and research coordinator of Stone Lab’s REU program.
Learn by doing
"The REU program at Stone Lab is such an invaluable experience because it provides students the opportunity to learn by doing, working alongside established scientists in the field and lab throughout the summer. It’s the type of experience that you just don’t get in the classroom – one that prepares you for a future career in science." — Dr. Steven McMurray, 2026 Stone Lab REU Mentor and Stone Lab Instructor
