The Ohio Pollinator Habitat Initiative (OPHI) is utilizing the help of Masters of Environment and Natural Resources (MENR) graduate students in the School of Environment and Natural Resources at The Ohio State University to educate citizens of all ages on pollinators. The initiative, started just one year ago, helps to create and improve pollinator habitat across Ohio. MENR students are serving as interns, providing vital start-up and continuing support to the new group, while gaining valuable experiences they can use in their future careers.

People need nature to survive. That’s one of the messages that Conservation International’s M. Sanjayan will share at The Ohio State University on Feb. 11. Sanjayan, a global conservation scientist, writer and Emmy-nominated news contributor, will present “Earth and People: Lessons in Living Together” from 7-8:30 p.m. in the 1,550-seat Archie M. Griffin Grand Ballroom in Ohio State’s Ohio Union, 1739 N. High St., in Columbus. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Congratulations to David Hix, who was promoted to the rank of Professor and Kristi Lekies, promoted to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure. On Thursday, November 12, Ohio State University faculty granted tenure or promotion effective in 2015-16 were recognized at the 13th annual Faculty Recognition Program at The Ohio State University. An Ohio State panel to discuss international law and the political complexities of the negotiations currently taking place at the 21st Conference of Parties at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, or COP21, at the Thompson Library on Wednesday, December 2. Crowdfunding can benefit green work, and December’s breakfast program by the Environmental Professionals Network will show how. Called “Tapping into Social Media, Green Investing and Other Tools to Fund Your Environmental Project or Enterprise,” the event is from 7:15-9:30 a.m. Dec. 8 in the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center, 2201 Fred Taylor Drive, at The Ohio State University in Columbus. “Social media-based support-building efforts are quickly emerging and evolving, and the traditional lines between nonprofit and for-profit organizations are blurring,” said David Hanselmann, the network’s coordinator and a lecturer in Ohio State’s School of Environment and Natural Resources.

Mažeika Sullivan, Kris Jaeger, Lauren Pintor, and Kaiguang Zhao, faculty in the School of Environment and Natural Resources, have been awarded a grant to study the sources and fates of nutrients in watersheds of the Ohio River basin. The project addresses the arising need to further quantify, spatially and temporally, phosphorus and nitrogen dynamics and their influences on aquatic life and harmful algal blooms

About 700 students will display science posters about Earth’s biggest challenges at the 2015 Environmental Science Student Symposium at The Ohio State University. The event goes from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 24, in Ohio State’s Ohio Union Performance Hall, 1739 N. High St., in Columbus. Admission is free and open to the public. This year marks the fourth year that Ohio State students enrolled in ENR 2100, an introductory environmental science course offered by the School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR), will present posters on their final projects. The projects cover pressing topics such as desertification, biodiversity, water quality, fossil fuels and more. The course attracts a wide range of students, with nearly every major at the university represented in the course.

School of Environment and Natural Resources assistant professor Suzanne Gray was recently awarded funding through Ohio Sea Grant’s research grants program to investigate the ecological and economic impact of algal and sedimentary turbidity on the recreational fishery in Lake Erie.
