What was this experience like? This internship involved land management work in a small area near Cleveland. Most of the time was spent working with volunteers to remove invasive species or planting native species. It also involved leading groups of high schoolers through land management type activities. Why are you interested in this field?I think it's important to spend your time doing something you really believe in, if that's a hobby or your career. Whether it's hands on work or looking at problems from an economic standpoint, I want to know the time I spend in my job is contributing to the problems I want to address. What are your suggestions for others to find similar internships?I would recommend looking for small companies/non profits and going on their website or calling them for an internship. Some companies will not advertise internships or positions outwardly, so if you aren't sure, reach out! Advice for students interested in a similar experience:It's all about networking. I had no experience before my experience but I knew people in the field and that helped me to get my internship. Even if you don't know people, it's about bringing seemingly unrelated experiences into why you'd be a good fit. I coached a 10 and under softball team one summer and I find that experience helps me in interviews to relate to the task at hand. How did this affect your career goals? It helped me to see that I didn't want to go this route for my future career. I enjoyed myself for a summer and I would recommend this internship for anyone on the fence of doing hands on conservation work. I learned a lot about native flora and fauna, however, I also learned that this wasn't the work for me. It narrowed down my options to more of the intellectual/theoretical side of environmental economics. |
