    Rattan Lal, a soil scientist at The Ohio State University, has been awarded the 2019 Japan Prize, considered one of the most prestigious honors in science and technology.  Lal is the first Ohio State scientist and the first soil scientist to ever receive the prize. He is Distinguished University Professor of Soil Science at the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences(CFAES).  The Japan Prize recognizes scientists and engineers from around the world for original and outstanding achievements that “not only contribute to the advancement of science and technology, but also promote peace and prosperity for all mankind,” the Japan Prize Foundation said today (Jan. 16) in announcing the award.

     - Ohio State graduate student wins international contest to improve the sustainability of our food system - 

     

    Henry Anton Peller, a PhD student in the School of Environment and Natural Resources, was recognized on November 28 at the 9th International Forum on Food and Nutrition by BCFN YES! 2018 in Milan, Italy for a project he and University of Edinburgh-Scotland colleague Cathy Smith presented to improve the sustainability of our food system.  BCFN YES! is an international contest for young people charged with coming up with practical projects to create a better balance between food sustainability and environmental sustainability.

    The winning project, YES! to participatory agroecology: Farmer-led plant breeding and soil regeneration in southern Belize will amplify scientific collaborations with Maya people. The project creates on-farm trials with dozens of cover crop, legume, and maize varieties; develops multi-species cover cropping practices to improve ecological soil fertility; and promotes farmer exchange of seeds, ideas, and dreams.

  3. TerrAqua recognized for fforts to improve the environment and educated and empowered others in the community to do the same.

    TerrAqua Receives Civic Engagement Award

    TerrAqua received the Rachel Carson Award for Civic Engagement at the 5th Annual Civic Engagement Banquet on Tuesday, October 23. Hosted by the Office of Student Life at The Ohio State University the banquet recognizes those in our community making great changes and impacts in civic engagement and service. TerrAqua was recognized for their outreach and enrichment work at Hidden Lake.

  4. Professor Lal Awarded Honorary Degree

    Professor Rattan Lal was awarded an Honorary Degree from Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, MN on October 2 for his contributions to the Nobel Peace Prize-winning intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and his lifetime work studying soils and soil conservation.  Watch online the presentation of this honor and read more here about his participation at the 54th Nobel Conference themed "Living Soil: A Universe Underfoot." 

    Rattan Lal is a Distinguished University Professor of Soil Science and Director of the Carbon Management and Sequestration Center at The Ohio State University.

  5. Elizabeth Berg named a 2019 finalist for the Knauss Fellowship Program.

    Graduate Student Named Prestigious Knauss Fellowship Finalist

    Congratulations to School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR) graduate student Elizabeth Berg, who has been named a finalist for the 2019 class of the John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship program.  Berg will join the 40th class of the prestigious John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship, a year-long program that places highly qualified graduate students in host offices in the legislative and executive branches of U.S. government.

  6. Emeritus Professor Bill Mitsch Receives Odum Award for Ecological Engineering Excellence in Houston,Texas.

    Professor Emeritus of Environment and Natural Resources and founding director of the Olentangy River Wetland Research Park Bill Mitsch received the first Odum award for Ecological Engineering Excellence from the American Ecological Engineering Society (AEES) at its 18th annual meeting in Houston in June. The meeting also featured the return of 10 current or past AEES presidents, including Mitsch, who started AEES at Ohio State in 2000. The Odum award is named for the late professors H.T. Odum of University of Florida and Eugene Odum of University of Georgia, brothers and preeminent pioneers in the field of ecology.

    Suzanne Marie Gray, an assistant professor in the School of Environment and Natural Resources has received the 2018 Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching at The Ohio State University.  Honored for their superior teaching, faculty members are nominated by present and former students and colleagues and selected by a committee of alumni, students, and faculty.

  8. "Our Common Home: A Youth-Based Approach to Food Security" has earned the Emerging International Engagement Award.

    "Our Common Home: A Youth-Based Approach to Food Security" has earned the Emerging International Engagement Award.  The award was established by Ohio State's Office of International Affairs and the Office of Outreach and Engagement to recognize faculty and staff who have engaged in exceptional international outreach and community service projects.  Recipients of the Emerging International Engagement Award have demonstrated outstanding promise in international outreach and engagement with the development of a relatively new initiative that has shown short-term results and has the potential for long-term impact, achievement, and scholarship.

    Faculty Member Surprised for Distinguished Teaching

    Suzanne Gray, an assistant professor of aquatic physiological ecology in the School of Environment and Natural Resources was paid a surprise visit this semester.  While teaching her capstone course on local and global water quality and aquatic issues on March 1, Gray was surprised by leaders from across the university with an announcement that she is a recipient of the 2018 Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching. The award honors faculty members at The Ohio State University for superior teaching. The awards ceremony will take place April 30.

    Environmental Science Major Recognized as Outstanding Senior

    Ashlee Balcerzak, an Environmental Science major in the SENR was recognized as a 2018 College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences Outstanding Senior.  The 2018 Outstanding Senior Awards were presented during the CFAES 2018 Outstanding Senior Awards Dinner on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at the OSU Fawcett Event Center.
