    Congratulations to John O'Meara, who was recognized at this year’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences 2017 Alumni Awards Luncheon.  John was recognized with the College’s Distinguished Alumni Award, which gives public recognition to those men and women who have brought distinction to themselves and to the college through their commitment and leadership. The awards luncheon was held March 4, 2016 at the Fawcett Event Center on the campus of The Ohio State University.  

  2. Matthew Bright, a PhD candidate with Professor Richard Dick in the School of Environment and Natural Resources was awarded first place in the graduate student poster competition for his poster, “Long-term Crop Productivity, Carbon, and Nutrient Dynamics in a Native Shrub (Guiera senegalensis) Cropping System of the Sahel” in Phoenix for the ASA Semi-Arid Dryland Cropping Systems Community.

    Soil scientists gather in Phoenix to share scientific research

    Soil science research conducted by faculty, staff and graduate students in the School of Environment and Natural Resources was well represented at the joint meetings of the Soil Science Society of America, the American Society of Agronomists and the Crop Science Society held in Phoenix, AZ. This year’s gathering was themed "Resilience Emerging from Scarcity and Abundance" and provided a wealth of opportunity for participants to network, hear inspiring speakers, learn about innovative research and participate in technical workshops and professional tours.

    Ohio State Scientists Part of Honored Corn-Climate Change Project

    A major project aimed at making corn production more resilient in the face of climate change, whose partners included scientists from The Ohio State University, was recently honored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA).  Called “Climate Change, Mitigation, and Adaptation in Corn-Based Cropping Systems,” the research, education and outreach project received NIFA’s 2016 Partnership Award for multistate efforts during the institute’s annual Day of Appreciation on Oct. 6 in Washington, D.C.  Also called the “Sustainable Corn Project,” the five-year, $20 million NIFA-funded endeavor was started in 2011; was directed by Lois Wright Morton, professor of sociology at Iowa State University; and included teams from 10 land-grant universities and two USDA Agricultural Research Service laboratories in nine Midwestern states — Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
  4. David Hix presented a poster highlighting the Joint Fire Science Program’s Fire Science National Knowledge Exchange Network.  Faculty and staff from SENR, including David Hix, Eric Toman, Jack McGowan-Stinski, and Charles Goebel help lead the Lake States Fire Science Consortium (LSFSC), a group of over 525 fire managers, practitioners, and scientists.  The objective of the LSFSC is to help communicate the best available fire science and do so through a variety of methods including webinars, research briefs,

    School of Environment and Natural Resources faculty and graduate students attended and presented posters on their forestry research at the 2016 Society of American Foresters (SAF) National Convention held in Madison, WI.

    Faculty Member Awarded Excellence in Teaching Award

    Brian H. Lower, associate professor in the School of Environment and Natural Resources at The Ohio State University, received the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) 2016 Excellence in College and University Teaching Award for Food and Agricultural Sciences at the 129th annual meeting of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities held in Austin, Texas.  Lower received the award for the U.S. North Central Region, which includes colleges and universities in IL, IN, IA, KS, MI, MN, MO, NE, ND, OH, SD, WI.  The award honors individuals who have a sustained pattern of excellence in college and university teaching in the fields of agriculture, natural resources, veterinary science, and/or human sciences.  The award is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU).

  6. Professor Lobao is the 2016 recipient of the Distinguished Rural Sociologist Award.

Lobao, professor of rural sociology and chair of the rural sociology program at The Ohio State University on receipt of the Distinguished Rural Sociologist Award at the 79th Annual Meeting of the Rural Sociological Society held in Toronto, Canada this summer.

    Professor Lal honored at faculty recognition program

    Congratulations to Rattan Lal, Distinguished University Professor of soil science in the School of Environment and Natural Resources, who was honored at a reception held on April 4, 2016, and hosted by Ohio State University President Michael Drake and Vice President for Research Caroline Whitacre. The reception was held at the university's Faculty Club and recognized Ohio State faculty members who received national or international awards during the 2015-2016 period.

  10. Professor Lal receives honorary degree from Technical University of Dresden

    Professor Rattan Lal, a soil scientist and Distinguished Professor at The Ohio State University, received the honorary degree as Doctor of Natural Sciences honoris causa from the Technical University (TU) of Dresden on September 23, 2015. “With the granting of this honorary doctorate, our university honors one of the world’s most famous and globally engaged soil scientists. His research topics and spheres of activities go far beyond soil science. Of global importance are Lal’s seminal and often cited publications on the potential for carbon storage in soils connected with global change, food security in a world with growing human population, as well sustainable and integrated management of soil and water resources. Moreover, we honor a person not only of high international standing, but also with a unique and charismatic personality”, says Karl-Heinz Feger, professor at the Institute of Soil Science and Site Ecology and Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences at TU of Dresden.
