Understanding adoption barriers and optimal use of sustainable energy technologies

    Feb 13, 2024

Graduate students in the School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR) presented their research at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) Annual Convention. The SPSP convention was held in San Diego, CA (February 7-10) and brings together attendees from academia, non-profits, government, and private sectors to present and discuss research, network and collaborate on projects, and pursue professional development while advancing science and pedagogy in the field. NSF Invests in holistic project to help farmers adapt to climate change

    Oct 31, 2023

The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded $1.6 million to a collaborative team of scientists to develop improved predictive models to help farmers and policymakers in Ohio, Georgia, and Iowa better prepare for changes in weather, markets, and policies.

“We’re trying to understand how the technical, socioeconomic and political landscapes in each state will evolve,” said Douglas Jackson-Smith, Kellogg Chair of Agroecosystem Management and a professor at The Ohio State University in the CFAES School of Environment and Natural Resources, “and how those factors interact with climate change to shape what and where different crops could be grown over the next 30 to 40 years in these three states.”  Learn more about this project and how it will engage farmers and agricultural experts >>

Creating a more sustainable world - several SENR students featured

    May 1, 2023

Several SENR students and how they are creating a more sustainable world are featured in Ohio State Impact (April 21).

Ohio State students are using the university’s research opportunities, student organizations and community connections to create a more sustainable world. This work is important to protecting our environment and creating a brighter future for generations ahead. Let’s look at seven ways Ohio State students are building the type of world they’d like to live in. Read the full story "7 ways our students create a more sustainable world".

  5. People having a discussion

A chat may help convert a peer to a pro-sustainability stance

    Feb 7, 2023

Changing the mind of someone who is dismissive of efforts to protect the planet could be accomplished by sharing a pro-sustainability point of view during a conversation, new research suggests.

In three experiments, researchers found that exposure to a pro-sustainability opinion in a conversation or written exchange helped coax people who held anti-sustainability views toward support for an environmentally friendly initiative.

Results also showed that people with a pro-sustainability viewpoint were not persuaded to change their commitment by talking to someone with an opposing point of view. The researchers noted that many sustainable behaviors – lowering the thermostat, recycling or buying fewer disposable products – are household or community endeavors that follow discussion and consideration. And so it follows, they say, that persuading others to adopt sustainable practices could be achieved through a common social activity: talking about it.

How a test drive may lead to an electric vehicle purchase

    Dec 20, 2022

Taking a spin boosts buyer identity as an early technology adopter

There’s something about test driving an electric vehicle that boosts some potential buyers’ personal identity as being early adopters of the latest technologies, a new study has found. And that strengthened sense of being a timely user of new gadgetry was linked to a higher likelihood that the test-driver would show interest in buying the car, the study suggested.  Though the test drive also increased study participants’ impression that an electric vehicle could function as a status symbol, that expectation did not translate into interest in making a purchase. The findings help increase understanding of what fuels consumer behavior behind purchases related to sustainability and offers insights that could guide electric vehicle (EV) marketing efforts, said senior author Nicole Sintov, associate professor of behavior, decision making and sustainability at The Ohio State University.

  10. Recent Graduate Sarah Fischer Pursues Career in Sustainable Energy.

Recent graduate pursues career in sustainable energy

    Jul 5, 2018

Sarah Fischer, a spring Ohio State graduate, became interested in sustainable international development as a high school student, when she learned that her French teacher’s husband was a former child slave in Haiti. Working with the nonprofit organization that he started to free other child slaves, she learned how deforestation and lack of environmental education contribute to poverty in developing countries such as Haiti. “At some point, I realized that it doesn't really make sense for us to go into other countries to tell them how to do things when we have so many environmental problems in the United States,” says Fischer, who received her degree in environment, economy, development and sustainability (EEDS). “So I began researching what our largest challenges were, and that’s how I got interested in promoting sustainability, specifically in the transportation and energy sectors.”
